Because both directions are evaluated, a BAR combination landing from both ends of a line can reach the 800x-per-line theoretical ceiling cited in NetEnt's specification. Values shown are coin multipliers, not multiples of total stake.
Several affiliate pages publish truncated or altered versions of this table, for example listing Red Gem at 25x/50x with only two columns. Those figures do not match the official NetEnt paytable and should not be used for expected-value estimates.
Figure 1: Starburst reel layout and expanding wild mechanics.
A 5×3 grid showing reels 1 through 5. Reels 1 and 5 hold standard gem symbols (red and yellow). Reel 3 displays an expanded Starburst Wild covering all three vertical rows with a glowing star animation. A lock icon marks reel 3 as frozen, while curved arrows around reels 1, 2, 4 and 5 illustrate the free re-spin in progress.

The defining element of the game is the starburst wild symbol, a multi-coloured, jewel-studded 8-pointed star. Starburst wilds appear exclusively on reels 2, 3 and 4, the central reels, and never land on reels 1 or 5. When a wild lands anywhere on a central reel, it clones itself vertically to cover all 3 positions on that reel. It then substitutes for any paying symbol to complete payline combinations.
Once expanded, the game holds the wild reel in place and triggers 1 free re-spin on the remaining reels. If another wild lands during that re-spin, it also expands, locks alongside the existing wild reel, and triggers another free re-spin. The chain runs to a maximum of 3 consecutive re-spins if wilds appear on all three central reels. Every re-spin is played at the stake of the triggering spin, and the sequence itself costs nothing extra.
That "almost there" reel behaviour, a wild locking without completing the grid, is worth understanding psychologically as well as mechanically. Pre-registered online experiments using a slot simulator found:
